What the Queen says about leadership

In her Platinum Jubilee week, many of us reflected on the life of Queen Elizabeth.

The values she takes from her faith provide, in her words, “the framework by which I try to lead my life.” Note: "try to". For all of us, our values are something to live up to.

In her 70 years on the throne, she has drawn on these values when offering guidance and counsel to over 170 Prime Ministers in countries of which she has been head of state.

Earlier this year, the Queen reflected on what makes a good leader. “For more than 70 years I have been lucky to meet and to know many of the world’s leaders and … have come to understand a little of what makes them special. What leaders do for their people today is government and politics. What they do for tomorrow: that is statesmanship.”

In other words, the actions of great leaders are for generations to come, based on values that are lasting, not fads. She exemplifies that, and it’s wonderful to take time this week to celebrate an exceptional woman.
